How Spirituality Relates to Better Mental and Physical Health
I have researched Dr Caroline Leaf's findings regarding neuroplasticity, and she has also written extensively on how our minds benefit from faith in God in her book, "Switch On Your Brain," which I also highly recommend to read.
The findings of neuroplasticity and the placebo and nocebo effects all clearly demonstrate that our minds and bodies are made to either benefit or be harmed by our thoughts and beliefs. According to Dictionary.com, the placebo effect is defined as: "a beneficial effect produced by a placebo drug or treatment, which cannot be attributed to the properties of the placebo itself, and must therefore be due to the patient's belief in that treatment." WebMD.com discusses the opposite effect, called the nocebo effect: "What happens when you're given a sugar pill, are told it's a drug that has terrible side effects, then start to exhibit those symptoms. The nocebo effect can also occur when a doctor tells you a surgery or procedure could have negative results: Just knowing the risks could negatively impact your recovery... all because of the power of suggestion."
